4 months ago I decided to change my career path from being an internal HR administrator to a legal resourcer at a specialist legal recruitment consultancy. You may be sitting there thinking there is not much difference between them, but I have found they are two completely different beasts, and here is why!
In 4 months I have gone from working in house for an international HR team where I was more of a number than a name, to being part of a specialist recruitment team where my input is invaluable to my colleagues. On paper my duties may look identical but in reality they are far from similar. Instead of spending my time sifting through CV’s, I now concentrate on building lasting relationships with our candidates. Swapping a computer and an office full of silence to a phone (which is my new best friend) and a busy, buzzing office environment. I have replaced automated job posts with inventive targeted job adverts, assisting the team in their search for the perfect candidate.
Taking a leap into the unknown was not easy for me, but I have developed new skills and with a supportive team around me proved to myself that with the right help and guidance the right career is possible. It is working with candidates on a daily basis that has highlighted this to me, as I now help others to achieve the potential out of their careers. Moving from a strict and inflexible environment to being a member of a relaxed and encouraging team has emphasised to me the importance of a happy working environment, and has shown me that this produces committed and motivated staff.
